The “One Laptop per Child” or OLPC is project by Nicholas Negroponte to supply children in third world countries with cheap computers, but looking at the specifications it looks like third world children have much the same needs as an on the trail hacker.
The laptop will only weigh 1.5 kg (53 oz) and be dust and water proof enough. It will operate at altitudes varying from –15m to 3048m. Power wont be a problem since the batteries can be charged with a hand crank.
There will also a built in wireless network that will connect to other on the trail hackers, if there are any that is. A 3G module might be handy though.
Today these laptops are not available to purchase but Reuters reports that they will start to sell around Christmas.
