Grass

When you are out hiking you tend to meet other hikers, and they come in all variations. Once in a while you come across people you notice a little extra, being a gear geek I tend to notice peoples gear. Most of the time I just state the fact that they are carrying way to much stuff, but the three below stood out from the crowd.

ALL THE PHOTOS ARE FAKE!

Pink Shirt hiker

The MegaUltraLight hiker

This guy I met recently while hiking with my girlfriend, he came walking on the trail in a well pressed pink shirt. And his gear you ask? Well, you see this guy must have been a MegaUltraLight hiker because he didn’t have any, not a water bottle, nothing.

The Festival Hiker

The Festival hiker

This is starting to look like a trend, I have seen this on several occasions. This is the kind of people that must have been camping at one of those muddy music festivals (Hultsfred, Roskilde, Glastonbury, etc) because they use the same packing/gear hiking in the mountains. Sleeping bag in one hand and plastic bag in the other and sometimes combined with a small backpack.

The dual packpacker

The Strong hiker

I met this guy, hiking in the mountains of Jämtland, Sweden and obviously he had a lot of gear. On his back he had a medium size backpack (about 50 L)  on the back of that he had strapped a huge backpack. Two thing struck me, 1. This guy have alot of gear! 2. He should have had the backpacks the other way around, the bigger pack should have a better harness.

Ok, now I have been mean for awhile, but I really pity these guys/girls because with equipment like these they will most likely find hiking appalling and never return.

Ergon Backpacks

Ergon has developed a new shoulder harness for backpacks a system they call Flink Link ball joint system. There are several backpacks with pivoting hip-belt but this is the first I have seen with a pivoting shoulder harness. I not sure that I like the idea but Ergon claims it reduces the perceived weight of your loaded pack by over 50%. There are three backpacks with the new system ranging from 16 liters to 33 liters.

Just had a chat with a Fjällräven representative about the new PAK5 line, this is short summary.

The main goal when creating the PAK5 line was to create lightweight gear that still is durable and has good quality. They have not aimed at the lightest gear ever made, but gear that can keep your pack weight down and still take the beating of outdoor use. Another focus during the development has been to keep the pack-size down.

The PAK5 is be a product line that will be developed further with new products added as time goes by. Fjällräven will also be launching a PAK5 winter gear line further on. The now presented products will hit the stores, sometime in March 2008.

Some product detail updates

Fjällräven PAK5 Backpack

The backpack has volume of 40 liter.

Fjällräven PAK5 Tent

The tent is a 2 person tent about the same size a Akka Shape R/S 2 though the outer length will be slightly shorter.
