A new paper titled Smart Materials and Structures presents a method for harvesting energy from backpack straps. Straps made out of Polyvinylidene fluoride(a strong, flexible material that feels very similar to nylon) has so called piezoelectric properties, meaning that an applied stress generates an electrical charge.
Simulations using a 100 pound load and a walking speed of 2-3 mph shows that the straps could generate 45.6 mW of power, enough to charge small electrical devices like headlamps and mp3 players.

This is a nice new product from Millet, is a backpack cover that has a built in flexible solar panel. The weight is 600 grams and it will recharge a phone in 1h, a GPS in 2h and a camera in 4h. If you and your friend has one of these each, you can connect them and reduce recharging times, but I imagine walking will be a bit harder..

Backcountry.com’s blog The Goat brought this Mark of Fitness heart-rate monitor to my attention (above). But I think it look’s a lot like Beurer’s PM 100 heart-rate monitor(below). I don’t know if it’s a copy or a licensed product, but the Beurer’s costs 147,95 Euros at Amazon.de and the Mark of Fitness costs $67.95(about 50 Euros) at ActiveForever.com.
